Meet Matthew Zorich

Stories have been part of my life for as long as I can remember.

My father was a voracious reader going to the library once a week to get a new book and taking me along. There I read newspapers, comics, popular science, and war books. Soon after my first visit, I fell into the rabbit hole of fantasy books. Between those high bookshelves, I would devour Dragonlance and pulp fantasy, which I can't find on shelves anymore. I can smell the old yellow pages even now. As I grew into later education, I consumed the beat writers, new journalism, and the classics. I attempted to become a "well-rounded" reader getting into the new "hot" literature that was changing the publishing industry. The hungry twenty-something mind was curious and yearned to expand into the great depths of literature. Now I read whatever I want, knowing my to-be-read list will never end.

I'm an Ohio-based writer with a degree in journalism from The University of Akron.

Comics, novels, and periodicals lay all over my house while several cats, two teens, and my incredible wife put up with my book hoarding. Along with reading, I appreciate long walks with loud music and a fine bourbon while gaming with his friends. Bastards of Liberty is my first fantasy novel.

My goal in writing is to tell a story for myself. If other readers dig it, that excites and motivates me. I enjoy breaking down uncomfortable situations and diving into how people react to those situations—starting my writing process with questions like - How are gods created? What makes a family? Can love overcome hate? And what really makes a hero? Happy endings, cliffhangers, or a measured closure are all possibilities in my books, but the main goal is to see where the characters take me.
